Which model should I choose? Read the differences

Start with the fit

  • Open-ear: AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4 and AirPods 5 Wireless. These do not use silicone ear tips.
  • In-ear: AirPods Pro 2 and Pro 3 use interchangeable tips to create a seal.
  • Over-ear: AirPods Max and Max 2 have cushioned ear cups and Digital Crown controls.

The differences that matter

AirPods 4 versus AirPods 4 with ANC

The standard version has no Active Noise Cancellation and its case charges by USB-C only. The ANC edition adds noise-control modes and case charging with Qi or an Apple Watch charger. Neither standard package includes a USB-C charging cable. See AirPods 4 · See AirPods 4 with ANC.

AirPods 5 Wireless versus AirPods 4 with ANC

Both offer an open-ear fit and wireless case charging. The listed AirPods 5 Wireless edition adds swipe volume control and a longer rated listening time with ANC. Its case supports USB-C, Qi and Apple Watch chargers. See AirPods 5 Wireless.

AirPods Pro 2 USB-C versus AirPods Pro 3

Both have an in-ear seal, H2 chips, ANC and USB-C MagSafe cases. Pro 2 includes four ear-tip sizes and a USB-C charging cable. Pro 3 includes five tip sizes, adding XXS; the cable is sold separately. Pro 3 has a longer rated single-charge listening time with ANC; Pro 2 has a higher rated total with its case. See Pro 2 USB-C · See Pro 3.

AirPods 3: Lightning case versus MagSafe case

The earbuds are the same generation. The Lightning case charges by cable only. The MagSafe case adds magnetic alignment and Qi wireless charging, and still has a Lightning port. MagSafe does not mean USB-C. See Lightning edition · See MagSafe edition.

AirPods 2 Wireless Charging Case edition

This listing pairs the classic AirPods 2 design with a Qi-compatible case and Lightning port. It has no ANC or MagSafe magnetic alignment. Its standard package includes a Lightning-to-USB-A cable. See AirPods 2 Wireless.

AirPods Max USB-C versus AirPods Max 2

The 2024 USB-C Max uses an H1 chip in each ear cup. Max 2 uses H2 and adds Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness. Both list up to 20 hours with ANC, USB-C charging, a Smart Case and a USB-C cable. The Smart Case does not contain a charging battery. See Max USB-C · See Max 2.

Understand charging in one minute

Lightning and USB-C describe cable connectors. Qi is wireless charging. MagSafe adds magnetic alignment with a compatible charger. Charging accessories must match the exact case; a wireless charging case is not automatically a MagSafe case.
